The accounts of the United Negro College Fund, underwritten by the National Endowment for the Humanities and collected by the Columbia Oral History Office in 1980-1981, provide a vivid picture of social and educational history in the United States over half a century. Changes in attitudes, standards and needs are faithfully documented, and the impact of the Brown vs Board of Education decision on integrated education is made clear. The role of the individual colleges and universities in developing leadership for the black community is assessed. The Fund was the first organization to apply the concept of cooperative fund raising to the field of higher education, and there are valuable insights for those interested.
